Statistics*

  • 31,880 reported violent crimes in the state of Missouri
    according to the Missouri Law Enforcement in 2006.

  • Violent crime rose 1.1% in non-metropolitan counties and in cities with populations between 10,000 and 24,999 in 2007.
  • Murder rates jumped 4.9% in metropolitan counties, 3.2 % in cities with 50,000 to 99,999 inhabitants, and 1.3% in non-metropolitan counties in 2007

  • 9,080 hate crimes with 78 reported in Missouri according to the Department of Justice in 2006.

  • Annually about 1.5 million women are physically assaulted. That’s one every 15 seconds.

  • One in 12 women will be stalked in her lifetime.

  • 13 million people, approximately 5% of the U.S. population are victims of crime every year with approximately 1.5 million being victims of a violent crime.

  • 1,530 estimated child fatalities in 2006 caused by an injury resulting from abuse or neglect, or where abuse or neglect was a contributing factor

  • In the United States, the health care cost of intimate partner violence against women totals $5.8 billion each year.

  • A 2002 study in India showed that intimate partner violence was the cause of 16% of maternal deaths during pregnancy.

  • In Nicaragua, research has shown that children of women who were abused by their partners were six times more likely to die before the age of five than other children.

  • Around the world, 1 in 3 women have been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in their lifetime. Most often, the abuser is a member of her own family.

SCHOOL SHOOTINGS FROM 1996 TO PRESENT*


  • February 2, 1996 - Washington - Two students and one teacher killed, one other wounded when 14 yr. old opened fire on his algebra class.

  • March 13, 1996 - Scotland - 16 children and one teacher killed at Primary School by Thomas Hamilton, who then killed himself. 10 others wounded in the attack.

  • February 19, 1997 - Alaska - Principal and one student killed, two others wounded by 16 yr. old.

  • March 1997 - Yemen - Eight people (six students and two others) at two schools by Mohammad Ahman al-Naziri

  • December 15, 1997 - Arkansas - Two students wounded by 14 yr. old as they stood in the parking lot.

  • May 19, 1998 - Tennessee - One student killed in the parking lot of his high school three days before he was to graduate.

  • May 21, 1998 - Oregon - Two students killed and 22 others wounded in their cafeteria by a 15 yr. old. His parents were later found dead at home.

  • June 15, 1998 - One teacher and one guidance counselor wounded by a 14 yr. old boy in the school hallway.

  • April 20, 1999 - Colorado - 14 students (including killers) and one teacher killed, 23 others wounded at Columbine High School. Eric Harris, 18 and Dylan Klebold, 17, had plotted for a year to kill at least 500 and blow up their school. At the end of their hour-long rampage, they turned their guns on themselves.

  • April 26, 2002 - Germany - 13 teachers, two students, and one policeman killed, ten wounded by 19 yr.-old who then killed himself.

  • September 28, 2004 - Argentina - Three students killed and 6 wounded by a 15-yr-old Argentinean student in a town 620 miles south of Buenos Aires.

  • October 13, 2006 - Pennsylvania - A 32-yr-old entered the one-room Amish School and shot 10 schoolgirls, ranging in age from 6 to 13 yrs. old, and then himself. Five of the girls and the shooter died.

  • April 16, 2007 - Virginia - A 23-yr-old Virginia Tech student, killed two in a dorm, then killed 30 more 2 hours later in a classroom building. His suicide brought the death toll to 33.  Fifteen others were wounded.

  • November 7, 2007 - Finland - An 18 yr old student in southern Finland shot and killed five boys, two girls and the female principal. At least 10 others were injured. The student shot himself and died from his wounds.

  • February 14, 2008 - Illinois - Gunman wounds 17 students, kills five more and then himself when he opens fire on a classroom at Northern Illinois University.

DATE OF VIOLENCE THROUGH HISTORY*

  • Armenian Genocide during WWI - beginning April 24, 1915, the total number of Armenian deaths generally held to have been between 1 - 1.5 million.

  • Holocaust during WWII - taking into account all the victims of Nazi persecution, the total number of victims is estimated to be nine to 11 million.

  • December 7 ,1941 - The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack conducted by the Japanese navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, later resulting the United States becoming militarily involved in World War II. The attack caused personnel losses of 2,402 killed and 1,282 wounded.

  • November 22, 1963 - John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, TX, at the age of 46. He was the thirty-fifth President of the United States, serving from 1961 until his assassination.  He is the only president to have won a Pulitzer Prize.

  • April 4, 1968 - Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, TN, at the age of 39. He was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. He had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts to end racial segregation and discrimination.

  • June 5, 1968 - Robert “Bobby” Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles, California, following a victory speech after the California primary at the age of 43. He died on June 6, 2008.

  • October 23, 1983 - Beirut, Lebanon - Beirut bombing attack was a major incident during Lebanese Civil War. 241 American servicemen, 58 French servicemen, 6 civilians and 2 suicide bombers were killed in this attack.

  • 1994 - Rwanda Genocide - the mass killing of hundreds of thousands of Rwanda’s minority Tutsis and the moderates of its Hutu majority over approx 100 days.

  • April 19, 1995 - a domestic terrorist attack aimed at the U.S. government in which the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, an office complex in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was bombed. The attack claimed 168 lives and left over 800 people injured.

  • October 12, 1998 - Wyoming, Matthew Shepherd was left for dead after having been beaten on October 6, 1998 and died on October 12, 1998.

  • October 12, 2000 - Bomb attack in Yemen on the USS Cole that killed 17 U.S. sailors.

  • April 28, 2001 - unidentified female corpse (presumed to be 3 to 4 years of age) discovered in Kansas City, Missouri. The girl, who had been murdered and decapitated, was labeled Precious Doe. On May 5, 2005, the body was identified as Erica Michelle Maria Green, age 3.

  • September 11, 2001 - 2,998 died in the attacks on the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon. 115 different countries had casualties. Locations of the four planes were New York City, Arlington Co, VA, and near Shanksville, PA. Date Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 8:46am to 10:28am. There were 6,291+ injured.

  • June 2, 2007 - Overland Park, Kansas - Kelsey Ann Smith was a teenager who was abducted from Target parking lot and was murdered that evening. Her body was found 4 days later.
